World's Most Extravagant Handbags
Hitha Prabhakar, 08.03.07, 12:01 AM ET

It's never too early to start thinking about your holiday wish list. Sure to top it this year? Chanel's "Diamond Forever" tote (pictured left). In December, the company will debut 13 of these diamond and alligator handbags just in time for the holiday shopping crunch. Each is a stepped-up version of the classic Chanel shoulder bag, with the iconic Chanel "Cs" encrusted in a staggering 334 diamonds (a total of 3.56 carats) set in 18-carat white gold. The alligator skin is farmed and treated with a matte finish.

The total cost: $260,150.

While few may actually end up owning this bag, the demand for other high-end handbags has skyrocketed. Online retailer eluxury.com saw sales of luxury handbags (those over $500) increase 11% last year.

"People want to spend their money on frivolous things," says Pamela Danziger, author of Why People Buy Things They Don't Need and founder of luxury goods research company Unity Marketing. "[And] handbags definitely fall into that category."

Scarcity is also driving desire for these totes. Something that is hard to obtain or impossible to find will be more valuable, says Meaghan Mahoney, editor of the daily news and handbag review online site purseblog.com.

"A handbag [such as] the Chanel Diamond Forever bag is more of a collector's item than something you use on a daily basis," she says. "Like an exquisite car or a rare painting, it's the limited availability and high demand that make this handbag more valuable."

Though Chanel's treasure may be the costliest handbag on the market, there are others that are just as costly, some dripping with diamonds, others crafted from animal skin.

A Purse Is Worth A Thousand Words
Take the Birkin by Hermes, a brand synonymous with luxury. This bag, inspired by French actress Jane Birkin, can fetch between $6,000 and $15,000, depending on what grade of leather or exotic skin it is made of.

But it is as nothing compared to its more exotic sister, the Crocodile Birkin. Price: $120,000. What makes this bag so expensive is not just the leather used but also the 10 carats of diamonds set in white gold and placed on its clasp. There are only two such bags available for purchase in the world

Bejeweled Bags
Accessorizing handbags with precious stones is not uncommon. The Leiber "Precious Rose bag incorporates 1,016 diamonds, 1,169 pink sapphires and 800 pink tourmalines, all set in 18-carat white gold. Cost: $92,000.

The Lana Marks Cleopatra Clutch in alligator ($100,000) comes accessorized with 1,500 fully cut and faceted black-and-white round diamonds that line the top of the handbag. Only five such clutches are made each year. In Hollywood during awards season the designer makes a limited-edition Cleopatra for only one actress. Two have won Academy Awards while in possession: Charlize Theron in 2004 and this year Helen Mirren, who carried hers right up to the podium.

Rare Skins
When it comes to alligator, ostrich or snakeskin, handbag designers go to extreme lengths to find the rarest. Santiago Gonzalez, chief executive of Nancy Gonzalez handbags, has traveled from the Australian Outback to Hong Kong to find skins that seldom come to market.

"What people don’t understand," he says, "is that it takes a certain amount of area on the skin to make a bag. If the lizard is too small, then you have to use more of it."

Quality also determines price. The Nancy Gonzalez Porousus Bag, made with rare lizard skin, costs $30,000. Designer Devi Kroell uses alligator skins whose scales are similar in size--a rare phenomenon--to create a bag priced at $29,000. Judith Leiber's canary yellow handbag in alligator ($17,000) likewise uses skin with similar-sized scales.

Try saying that three times.

What with animal rights activists up in arms over fashionistas in fur, might we not soon see the day when lizard lovers will be pressured to not buy bags that once swam or slithered?

“As much you would think there would be a huge backlash, there won't be,” says Danziger. “It goes back to the basic rule of supply and demand. The more rare and scarce something is, the more people want it. In the case of overly expensive handbags, people will still covet them because it's an uncommon find.”

Clothing Styles Tips, Tricks & Fashion
Advice for All Women and Teens of All Body Types

1. The Foundation of Your Wardrobe Should be Clothing Basics

Lots of clothes but nothing to wear? Most of the time it’s because all those great clothes don’t match each other. Simplify by creating a neutral wardrobe of beiges, taupes, whites, off-whites , grays and blacks. Black and white is great, but if you start with extremes, you’ll still have trouble matching with other clothes, and if you wear them together, you risk looking like a casino employee on the way to work. Start with offs—a variety of cream colors, and add gradually as you go along.

2. Black is Not as Body Flattering As You Might Think

Black has long been known as the fail-safe color of choice for everything from not knowing what to wear to an important function to appearing slimmer (presumably by blending into the background). Forget all that stuff—black can add age to your years, conflicts with many complexions, and appears in itself, heavy, solid and thick. Think light and airy when you’re choosing clothes; pick colors you like. If you fear color, start small, with lighter outerwear boosted with an occasional bright scarf. You may find that wearing lighter, brighter colors lightens up your mood as well.

3. Get Designer Clothing Brand for Less in the Lingerie Section

Find cute summer clothes for less in the plus size lingerie section of your favorite designers. Camisoles, slips and pajamas do double duty as outerwear in the warm and playful fashion atmosphere of summer.

4. A Tip for Great Fitting Blue Jeans and Denim

Can’t find jeans that fit you right? Head straight for men’s jeans. Who knows why clothing companies create women’s clothing that can’t fit real women, but it’s a fact that they can’t. On the other hand, they seem to understand that men come in varying sizes and prefer clothes that won’t pinch, rub, bind or sag at the waist while cutting off blood to the hips. Do your homework (men’s jeans are sized by waist and inseam—if you use your hip width for the waist size, you’ll be close on your first try) and try it in men’s.

5. The Little Black Dress and Classic Fashions

Looking for the perfect Little Black Dress? Maybe Audrey Hepburn’s floor-length evening gown isn’t what you had in mind. The key to the LBD (which doesn’t have to be “little” by the way), is that is has one focal point and much subtlety. Subtlety is key, as the LBD is a staple of the classic French wardrobe, which demands understatement. Many LBDs fail because they try to do too much—show cleavage, draw attention to the legs, point out the waist. The fact is, that when you combine several fashion features at once, you end up with a mess, a real fashion disaster! Pick your LBD based on what you’re proud of—nice shoulders, pretty legs, a beautiful bust—but don’t try to show it all off at once.

6. Clothing Trend with Staying Power: Dress up a Classic White Shirt

A man’s white tuxedo shirt, worn with frankly feminine jewelry and a skirt adds a playful note to a dramatic wardrobe. Don’t make the mistake of keeping everything around it sleekly tailored—it’s the contrast that makes the look work.

7. Yoga Pants are Stylish and Flattering

Yoga pants, in misses or plus sizes, are cute even when you aren’t doing yoga. It’s something about the way they fit around the ankle, with a little extra fabric between the ankle bone and the top of the foot. Wear them with bodysuits or camisoles for the best effect. To devastate, wear them with thin, strapped, flat sandal, and add a toe ring.

8. Keep that Old Sweat Shirt Current to Today’s Fashion

Revamp an old sweatshirt by cutting the neckline wide at the shoulders. Cut off the sleeves either midway between wrist and elbow or above the elbow. Wear a tank top or camisole underneath, or use as a cover-up for a bathing suit. Wear it over shorts to wash the car. Add long johns underneath for your winter or skiing wardrobe, and you have an all-season fashion statement.

9. Cute Sleepwear Can Give You a Self Esteem Boost and a Good Nights Sleep

What do you wear to sleep in? If you’re like most of us, it’s something along the lines of a comfortable t-shirt and a pair of sweats. Give yourself a little pick-me-up with nighties that say much and mean little, and wear them around the house just for kicks. Try a baby-doll, that invitation to wild times from days gone by, or a strappy silk confection that clearly wasn’t meant to be slept in. Silk pajamas are fun for lounging, and even an old-fashioned embroidered cotton nightgown can put you in a different frame of mind. As you’re getting into bed, swap your play-clothes for—you guessed it—that comfy T-shirt and those soft, old sweats.

 Slingbacks

Top Slingback Shoes for Women

By Desiree Stimpert, About.com

Easy to wear and loaded with style, slingbacks are easily one of my favorite women's shoe styles. Here are a few of the finest.

1. Pelle Moda "Xcite" - Sexy Slingbacks

These sexy shoes don't just rate among my favorite slingbacks, they're among my favorite shoes of any style. The scariness of the 5" stacked heel is offset a little by the concealed platform sole, which is fairly substantial. The peep-toe design is super-hot, and the color choices are amazing. I'm particularly smitten with the army green eel and the light blue patent -- both of which are very unique.
Combining matte leather uppers with patent leather accents, these slingbacks are sophisticated and sexy. With 4" heels and and adjustable heel straps, these shoes will take you from the office to dinner in style. Available in black, burgundy or a "must-see" shade of grey, the "Theory" is versatile enough to work with nearly anything in your wardrobe.

3. Nine West "Kattan" - Cute and Unique Slingback Shoes

Extremely cute, and inspiringly original, this mod slingback features a big round buckle on its low-cut vamp, and a 2.75" chunky, stacked heel. They'd certainly add a bit of variety to your work wardrobe, but these shoes are trendy enough to go casual as well -- try them with jeans or a fun skirt.

4. Matisse "Chelsea" - Closed-Toe Slingbacks

A total departure from most of the slingbacks on this list, these stylish shoes are best worn with jeans or pants. The pointy toe and gathered upper give the illusion of a chic boot, but the back-tied strap delivers the freedom of a sling-back. The black version is nice, but the chocolate is luscious.

5. Guess "Daralis" - Pretty Suede Slingbacks

It's the angular heel that takes this slingback to a whole new level -- and the luxe suede uppers doesn't hurt its case either. Available in red, brown or black leather, these open-toed dress shoes feature partially concealed platforms, knotted vamps, and loads of sex appeal. Shoes like these are a great way to inject a bit of personality into your wardrobe without getting too quirky.

6. Max Studio "Xalt" - Buckled Slingbacks

Totally unique and utterly irresistible, these open-toed slingbacks have 4" heels, and open vamps with two mini buckled straps. Offered in red, black, brown or a gorgeous shade of dark green, these stunners have an adjustable heel strap that will help them stay put.

7. Oh Deer "Twiggy" - Metallic Woven Sling-Backs

oh_deer_twiggy.jpgImage courtesy of Zappos.com
What I like about these unique sling-backs is that they combine their metallic woven mesh uppers with cork heels. So they're sexy and shimmery, while still being on the casual side -- and they're awesome in black as well.

8. BCBGirls "Precious" - Concealed Platform Slingbacks

With a peep toe design and criss-cross vamp straps, what really makes these slingbacks shine is that their platform sole is mostly concealed. This creates a super-sexy profile ... and the 4.5" heels don't hurt on that front either. I adore the big round button on the slingback strap, and the beige marble finish is gorgeous.

Seven Must-Have

Spring 2008

Fashion Trends What's In,

What's Out

By Ayanna G., published Mar 06, 2008

Trends seem to come and go about as fast as the average Hollywood marriage. While there will always be classics which can be worn year in and year out, there are some styles that seem to be all the rage during a particular season. Wearing a trend from a few seasons past isn't necessarily a cardinal sin (though your personal stylist may think otherwise). But keeping up on the season's current trends may just help you to beef up your wardrobe.

Out: Ballerina Flats
In: Mary Jane Flats

People were shocked when a popular 80's style, the ballerina flat, made a comeback on the fashion scene. Coupled with cute skirts and skinny jeans, this look has been seen on the feet of celebrities for the past couple of seasons. But it appears that shoe designers have taken the style a step further (pun intended). The Mary Jane flat is just as trendy as it's dance-inspired counterpart; but the strap falling across the shoe gives the look an additional innocent flair.

Out: Big, Bright Florals
In: Bohemian Florals

There are more ways than one to make a statement with flowers. Where huge floral patterns once served as the stars of the fashion runway, more understated floral patterns are making an appearance in Spring 2008. Bohemian blouses and sun dresses are wonderful when punctuated with a large supple tote and delicate, yet earthy jewelry.

Out: Neutral Sandals
In: Metallic Sandals

Neutrals will always be en vogue until the end of time. But metallic sandals bring out this season's lush hues. Break up the monotony of your little black dress with a bold pair of strappy silver sandals for a little extra garnish. Golds and coppers are great when paired with bold reds, or even neutral colors.

Out: Plain Vests
In: Belted Vests

To add a little androgyny to your wardrobe, try wearing a vest with a flirty feminine blouse. But take things a step further by adding a belt. Belts are great for accentuating a slim waistline, and for adding a little military "punch" to an ensemble.

Out: Big, Flowing Hair
In: Chic, Edgy Bobs

While the bob is a hairdo that has never really gone out of style, it seems to be one of this season's most fierce hair options. Some may argue about who actually reinstated the bob's popularity. But celebrities like Rihanna and Katie Holmes have shown women everywhere how a simple update to the look can work wonders. Try an asymmetrical razor cut for edgier looks. Or give your own spin to Katie Holmes' sweet bangs and sassy length.

Out: Bootleg Jeans
In: Skinny / Wide Leg Jeans

Bootleg jeans will more than likely remain a staple of the average woman's wardrobe. But it looks like skinny jeans are here to stay... at least for a little while. With footwear emphasis falling heavy on pretty flats the skinny jean is best for showcasing this ultra-feminine style. On the contrary, chunky platforms are in top form when coupled with a pair of wide-legged jeans.

Out: "Busy" Patterns
In: Juicy, Bright Colors

In recently passed seasons, nautical accents and pieces were extremely popular. This spring, designers are trading in the naval gear for juicy, bold colors. You'll see lots of bright greens, luscious yellows, and succulent fuchsia tones on everything from evening wear to workplace ensembles. When wearing these, use understated accents to keep outfits balanced. Or emphasize the richness of neutrals with a punch of color on the feet.

What You Need To Provision Yourself For Summer
April 22, 2008, 4:29 pm
| Tags:One pair of high(er) quality sunglasses. Don’t mess around with this one. Invest in a classic looking pair that is versatile enough to wear with most outfits and you’re good to go.
  • Two pairs of sandals (no flip flops). Flip flops are the nastiest summer footwear. By my standards, they’re only acceptable on sand or by a pool. I don’t care if you’re buying Prada thongs or dollar store nasties; keep ‘em away from the city streets.
  • A pedicurist if you intend on wearing said sandals. This goes for both men and women. Nasty feet equals a horrendous sight. Don’t wear sandals if you can’t keep up your end of the visual bargain by making your feet look presentable.
  • Ample supplies of wax or razors. Nobody likes the sight of a simian in scant clothing! If you’re a super hairy guy, try using a creame that thins hair or just remove it all together. Having a back [or chest] that competes with your city zoo’s gorillas isn’t preferrable. As for women, just wax for heaven’s sake. We won’t get into the particulars of where, but since more is shown while wearing that pre-teen sized bikini, you won’t want to be mistaken for that bra-burning hippie down the street.
  • Treat yourself to some new pieces. They don’t have to be super expensive, but make sure you’re fitting your clothes. Nothing is more unattractive than a baggy ass from all that loose fabric on last year’s shorts or muffin tops spilling over for all to see thanks to that tank top your room-mate shrunk last August.
  • Buy underwear that fits. Too many girls wear too many thongs (etc) that ride up their rears. This goes hand-in-hand with having clothing that fits, and definitely applies to boys as well. Having a puff topping of boxer out of your shorts isn’t attractive whatsoever.
  • Appropriate sunblock for your face and body. If you’re pasty as I am, you’re going to want to get 30+ UVA/UVB, at least for the beginning of the summer when your ghoulish skin isn’t used to the rays just yet. After a few weeks, ramp down, but always remember to apply. You will probably need a different [higher number] non-greasy kind for your face. Personally, I use this Neutrogena matte block, and it’s perfect.

Well ladies and gents, that’s all I have for you. Here’s to enjoying the impending summer weather (you here that, Nature? Anytime…)

My Favourite Sunglasses For Summer 2008 Belong To Prada

If I do allow myself new sunglasses this summer, there will be only one pair that will be purchased.

As the over-sized shades remain strong, I have really gotten tired of the 60s circular bug look. Prada’s 01IS” model, however, offer the large frame with a more classic square shape.

The style is very plain, but will blend in with everything you own. I personally prefer the black version over the tortoiseshell brown; especially if you wish to carry these shades into Fall 2008 gracefully.  Thankfully, new 2008 releases lean more towards classic Hollywood rather than Trendy starlet.

Be warned, though: you’ll certainly be draining your bank account if you choose to pick up a pair of these… this particular model is retailing for approx. $350 CA.
